Nasra Valentine

This is Nasra Valentine, she is 6 years old she is in Mama Wachira children's home, she was rescued by her neighbour after her mum abandoned her with her her drunken father who neglected her and left her alone for days without food when she was 2 years old.

She now in grade 1 at Waso Muslim comprehensive school.

Diliano Lengla

This is Diliano Lengla, When Diliano was just 7 years old, he lost his mother and went to live with his uncle. Instead of sending him to school, his uncle forced him to herd livestock. Diliano's days began at 4 a.m. and ended around 5 p.m., while his 7 cousins attended school.

He survived on just one meal a day. His situation only changed when a Childrens officer, was alerted to his circumstances, made an unannounced visit.

Seeing the conditions firsthand, the officer rescued Kim and placed him in a children’s home, where he has now lived for the past four years.

He now in grade 3 at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School.

Ginah Silani

This is Ginah Silani, she is 13 years old, When she was 8 years old, her father attempted to marry her off to an older man. He refused to let her attend school and, following tradition, subjected her to practices meant to make her appear attractive to potential suitors.

Eventually, when men began approaching to seek her hand in marriage, her uncle intervened and rescued her. She was taken to a Mama Wachira Children’s Home, where she has lived for the past five years.

She is now in grade three, at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School.

John Lopaga

This is John Lopaga, he is 10 years old, When John was just two years old, his father abandoned him, leaving him in the care of his grandmother, who was already partially blind.

She looked after him until he was 8 years old, but as her condition worsened and she became completely blind, she could no longer provide for him. Struggling even to afford food, she sought help from a Mama Wachira Children’s Home, asking if they could take John in, so that her grandchild might still have the opportunity to go to school as she could no longer provide.

Now, she survives by begging, relying on the kindness of others who give her food. John has never seen his parents and knows nothing about them.

Today, he is 10 years old and in grade 1 at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School.

Mary Wangari

This is Mary Wangari, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who has been living at the Mama Wachira Children’s Home since she was one.

Her mother abandoned her when she was just 6 months old, leaving her in the care of her aunt. The aunt, already struggling to provide for her nine children, could not manage to care for Mary.

After six months, she learned about the children’s home and brought Mary here in the hope of a better life. When Mary first arrived, she was severely malnourished and very small for her age. With proper care and nutrition, she has since grown into a healthy and happy child.

She is now two and a half years old and is expected to start school next year.

Marcus Loptuk

This is Marcus Loptuk, he is 11 years old, he  has lived with his uncle for as long as he can remember as his mother is mentally ill.

Unlike his cousins, who were allowed to attend school, Marcus was never given the chance to study. Instead, his daily responsibility was to herd sheep, goats, and cows. Whenever an animal was lost, he was beaten so severely that at times he lost consciousness.

One day, while returning from the market in Archers post, he happened to meet his brother by coincidence. His brother was on his way to church to practice for a performance. During their conversation, Marcus learned about his brother’s life at the children’s home; how he ate three meals a day, had clothes and shoes, attended school, and could now read and write. Filled with hope, Marcus asked if he too might be accepted at the children’s home. His brother assured him that he would, since it was a place for children in need.

That same day, he returned home to his uncle and began plan his escape. He decided the best time would be on Sunday. So at 4 a.m Marcus set out on foot, running away from home. He walked 15 kilometers for five hours through a forest filled with dangerous wild animals before finally reaching the church as he did not know the way to the children's home, where he reunited with his brother. Together, they went to the Mama Wachira children’s home.

Marcus was warmly welcomed and soon enrolled in school. During his first interview, he performed so well that he skipped a grade.

Just one year later, he has advanced even further and is now in grade 2, thriving in both his studies and his new life. He studies at Girgir Comprehensive School.

Janet Naimilie

This is Janet Naimilie, is 13 years old, When Janet was nine years old, her mother passed away, leaving her and her six siblings orphaned.

Their uncle took them in but pulled them out of school. He forced Janet’s brother to work as a shepherd and made Janet serve as a housemaid, while his own children continued their education some even completing high school.

Janet and her siblings endured long, exhausting days, often surviving on only one meal or at times, nothing at all. The youngest child was only six months old.

Desperate for a way out, Janet turned to a neighbour for help. The neighbour reported her situation to the local chief, who intervened. Janet was placed in a children’s home, while her siblings were taken to different homes. Although Janet was naturally bright, the long break from school meant she had to repeat classes to catch up.

Today, she is steadily progressing and is now in grade three, at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School.

Sarah Koona

This is Sarah Koona, she is 6 years old, and has been at the children’s home for the past two years.

She was brought here by her grandmother when she was four, after her mother became severely mentally unstable. Her mother’s condition led to violent behavior—she would strangle Sarah, attack her grandmother, and even lash out at neighbors and passersby.

Fearing for Sarah’s safety, her grandmother sought advice and was told about the children’s home. Despite living far away, she managed to raise some money and brought Sarah here.

Since then, Sarah has been safe, cared for, and is now steadily progressing in nursery school, and will join grade 1 next year.

She is currently attending school at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School.

Melvin Chaka

This is Melvin Chaka, he is 7 years old schooling at waso muslim comprehensive school, he is in grade 1, he comes from a humble background family, he lives with is 90 year old grandmother.

They come from a very humble background and often struggle to meet basic needs. At times, they go without food and must come to the children’s home to ask for help.

Support would greatly improve their living conditions by providing them with better shelter, daily meals, clothing, and school fees.

Bianca Naasas

This is Bianca Naasas, she is 14 years old. At the age of nine, she was forced into marriage with an older man.

On their way to his home after the wedding, their vehicle was stopped at a police roadblock. They were asked where they came from they said a wedding. When asked whose wedding it was, the man’s family pointed to Bianca. Shocked, the officers realised she was just a child and immediately intervened.

The car was stopped, the engine turned off, and arrests were made including those who had attended the wedding. Bianca was removed from the situation and placed in a children’s home for her safety. However, the mans family soon began searching for her in an attempt to take her back and continue the marriage. To protect her, she was moved to a safe location for two years until the tension subsided.

When she returned, she resumed her studies with determination. Now 14, Bianca is in Grade 5 at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School, where she is thriving academically. Bright and ambitious, she dreams of one day becoming a doctor.

Leshao Lokini

This is Leshao Lokini, he is in grade 7 at Waso Muslim Comprehensive School, He 13 year old boy.

He lives with his mother, who struggles with mental illness. When she is stable, she is a loving and caring parent, but when unwell, she often disappears sometimes for months, even up to a year leaving him to fend for himself.

During these times, he survives by asking for food from neighbors, yet he remains dedicated to his education, rarely missing school unless he is sick.

These days, he often eats at the mama wachira children’s home before returning to his house in the evenings. He continues to work hard in school and dreams of becoming a lawyer after completing his education.

Support and assistance would greatly help him secure food, stability, and the opportunity to pursue his ambitions.

Catherine Naisula

This is Catherine Naisula,  she is 14 years old in grade 6 at Waso Muslim comprehensive school, She lives with her mother, who suffers from a possibly treatable mental illness.

Though their extended family is well to do, they have completely abandoned Catherine and her mother, looking down on them instead of offering support. Without access to medical care, her mother’s condition has worsened, leaving her unstable and unable to provide.

Together, they survive by collecting garbage and bottles for recycling. Often, they do not earn enough to buy food, and some nights they go to bed hungry.

Catherine sometimes misses school because of these struggles, yet she continues to hold onto hope for a better future.
